AMMONNEWS - Senate President, Faisal Al Fayez, called on the European Union (EU) to support Jordan economically, especially in light of the accelerating regional events that affected Jordan and made life difficult for its citizens.
During a meeting held by the Jordan-EU parliamentary friendship committee, chaired by the Senate President and attended by head of the committee Senator Alia Bouran, with EU Ambassador to Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou, in the presence of the committee's members, Al Fayez called on the international community to assume all its responsibilities towards Jordan to enable it to continue its pivotal role in the region and as a country seeking peace.
Al Fayez lauded the European Parliament's vote to grant Jordan a 500 million euros soft loan, after a recent speech delivered by His Majesty King Abdullah II at the European Parliament recently, which will alleviate economic challenges Jordan are facing due to the ongoing conflicts and crises in the region.
Al-Fayez said Jordan, despite the region’s conflicts, is politically and security-strong, and is able to protect its security and stability, stressing that Jordan’s support and economic empowerment is a support for the region’s stability, where it constitutes the cornerstone.
He expressed appreciation for the EU’s stances in supporting Jordan’s stances led by the King towards the peace process in the region, the necessity of resolving the Syrian crisis politically, and ending the Arab-Israeli conflict in accordance with international legal resolutions, which are the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders.
Al-Fayez also called on the European Union to play a more effective role towards the region's crises and conflicts, and work to end them, as the security and stability of the region is in the interest of the whole world.
For her part, EU Ambassador to Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou, reviewed themes that the EU embassy is working on, including the support for economic stability, human development, and refugee support, along with climate change challenges.
She commended Jordan's efforts, led by King Abdullah, aimed at bringing peace and stability to the region, as well as Jordan's humanitarian role in hosting Syrian refugees despite its limited resources.
She stressed the European Union’s keenness to strengthen its relations with Jordan, which was established nearly 40 years ago, and to build on existing relations to include multiple fields, in the interests Jordan and EU peoples.
