AMMONNEWS - Oman's state TV announced Saturday that Haitham bin Tariq Al Said was named Sultan of Oman, succeeding Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who passed away Friday evening.
Oman's defense council had called on the royal family council to convene in order to choose a successor following the death of Sultan Qaboos.
The 1996 Omani statute stipulates that a successor must be named by the ruling family within three days of the throne falling vacant.
