FM, UNHCR chief discuss cooperation on Syrian refugees
AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Monday met with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, and discussed cooperation on Syrian refugees.
Safadi and Grandi affirmed the need to continue cooperation between Jordan and UNHCR in mobilizing international support to help meet the needs of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom, stressing that the international community should continue to shoulder its responsibilities to ensure continuity of vital services provided to the refugees.
Safadi said that the Kingdom, which hosts 1.3 million Syrian refugees, has exceeded its capacity and is doing all it can to meet the needs of the refugees despite the enormous pressure imposed on the national economy and on key sectors such as health and education, warning against the negative repercussions of the decline of the international support for refugees.
He pointed out that the Kingdom encourages the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
Grandi, for his part, stressed the importance of the partnership between Jordan and UNHCR in helping refugees, praising the Jordanian role in meeting the refugees' needs and providing them with key services.
