AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II, on Thursday, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held talks at Al- Hussainiyah Palace focusing on strategic partnership, regional and international developments as well.
In joint press remarks, His Majesty said: ' I think your visit, Madam Chancellor, indicates the significance you attach to this visit, which we highly appreciate and welcome'.
Speaking about Jordanian-German ties, His stressed that the ties between the two countries have grown stronger and said: ' Throughout this year, I have had the chance to meet and coordinate with my dear friend, Your Excellency Madame Chancellor, as well as His Excellency the President and the Minister of Defence'.
His Majesty stressed: ' And Jordan highly appreciates its close friendship with Germany and your country’s continued support for our development efforts, namely in our education and water sectors', noting that, ' As the largest donor at the Brussels conference, Germany understands the great burden of the Syrian refugee crisis and is providing generous assistance to host countries such as Jordan'.
His Majesty added, ' As we work towards further enhancing our economic ties, the business leaders accompanying you today have the chance to explore the unique opportunities Jordan has to offer in terms of investments and human resources'. And, ' This is a huge potential to increase investment and trade by utilising the EU-Jordan Rules of Origin agreement, and we have long been working with Germany and the European Union to capitalise on this effort'.
The King also said: ' On key regional files, we share a common view and understanding,' adding that, ' Our defence and security cooperation has helped enhance the security of both our countries, but also throughout the wider region'.
On Palestine, His Majesty said that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains the region’s key issue, and Germany and the EU have a major role to play in advancing peace efforts, based on the two-state solution.
His Majesty pointed out that there can be no peace nor stability in the region without a just and lasting solution that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in peace and security.
On Jerusalem, the King stressed that Jordan remains committed to upholding its role, as well as its responsibility as Custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites.
On the Syria crisis, His Majesty said: ' We also see eye to eye on the need for a political solution in Syria that guarantees the country’s territorial integrity and the unity of its people'.
His Majesty also said: ' These are some of the topics that we continue to discuss and coordinate on, and we are committed to continuing our cooperation'.
