Jordan, Russia sign deal to build small nuclear reactor
AMMONNEWS - Jordan and the Russian Federation signed an agreement to carry out a joint feasibility study to build a Russian nuclear reactor of the type of compact micro reactors in the Kingdom.
The Jordan Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement on Saturday that the deal signed by the agency with Russia's Rusatom Overseas on May 24 will enable the two sides to carry out the feasibility study to build the nuclear reactor.
According to the statement, the agreement comes within the framework of a Jordanian-Russian decision to focus on cooperation in the area of small compact micro reactors, in order to complement the cooperation and studies conducted by the two sides regarding large nuclear power reactors.
It said that the two sides look forward to 'the benefit from joint cooperation in the field of compact reactors, and the vitality and possibility of using this type of reactors in the Kingdom as a result of the change in the Jordanian energy market.' 'We have cooperated with Rusatom for many years, and we are developing this cooperation in various fields,' said Jordan's Atomic Energy Agency President Khaled Tuqan, adding that the proposed project to build a compact nuclear power plant is 'more suited to energy market requirements and more needed, and that's why we want to focus on this project.' 'The projects we are implementing must meet the strategic needs and interests of the countries where they are launched, and that's why we, together with our Jordanian partners, have decided to focus our cooperation on enhancing the compact micro-reactor technology that is based on the innovative solutions of Rusatom,' said Rusatom Overseas President Evgeny Pakermanov.
He added that compact micro-reactor technologies will become 'one of our top priorities' in the development of the global energy market.
The statement said Russia had vast and internationally-acclaimed experience in compact micro reactors, and that Rusatom will in early 2019 operate its Academic Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant, which will become the world's first global reference for this type of floating nuclear power plant.
Rusatom, according to the statement, is developing its ground-based nuclear power plant relying on compact micro-reactor technology, which can be used as a desalination and heating station. It said Jordan looked forward to taking advantage of all technologies to boost its domestic dependence on energy.
Jordan and Russia are closely cooperating in the field of human resources development to implement the nuclear program in the Kingdom, as 100 Jordanian students are currently completing their bachelor's, master's and other postgraduate studies at reputed Russian universities.
