Trump team to discuss options to pull out of Syria
AMMONNEWS - US President Donald Trump will discuss with his national security team on Tuesday options to come out of Syria after ISIS’s defeat.
According to The National, the potential withdrawal would be determined by the defeat of ISIS .
However, no further details were given to clarify whether there would be changes in the US mission but the focus on eliminating ISIS remains at the center of the US operation in Syria.
The US says its presence in Syria is very “light” and “could probably be abandoned in no time,” a State Department official told The National.
A more managed transition is advised, however, “in which the US sticks around long enough for its local partners to negotiate some interim agreement with Damascus,” he said.
It is feared that 'the main benefactor of a US withdrawal from the north-east would be Bashar Al Assad and his allies – including Iran”, he added.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, senator Lindsey Graham and regional leaders are hesitant against a US pullout from Syria, but still the US mission’s objectives in war-ravaged country remain “loose,” the official added.
