Parliament's agriculture committee resigns over production inputs tax
AMMONNEWS - Members of the Lower House's Agriculture and Water Committee on Tuesday said their are resigning from the committee in protest of the 'government's failure' to respond to their demand of exempting the agricultural sector from a newly-introduced 10-percent tax on production inputs.
The decision was announced following the committee's meeting with a number of ministers and agriculture sector stakeholders.
Head of the Committee MP Khalid Hiyari (Balqa governorate/First Constituency) said the committee had held several meetings and maintained equal distance from all stakeholders, however, 'the government's position was incommensurate with the reality of the most significant dilemmas facing the agricultural sector'.
He added that the resignation decision 'was logical given the government's failure to respond to the agricultural sector's demands, which is one of the most important sectors that contributes to strengthening community security and the national economy.' Members of the governmental team, who attended the meeting, told Petra that the proposals, put forward by the committee and agricultural sector's representatives, will by studied and 'whatever possible among them', will be implemented.
They said the agricultural committee's demand are the focus of the government, stressing the importance of the agricultural sector.
The members of the committee who submitted their resignations, in addition to MP Hiyari, were: Majid al-Qwaism, Ali al-Hajahjeh, Habis al-Shabib, Habis al-Fayez, Kamal al-Zoghul, Fidiyah al-Dayyat, Hamoud al-Zawahreh, Adnan al-Rkeibat and Mejhim al-Sqour, while MP Musa Hantash didn't submit his resignation from the committee.
