Jordan Ambassador to Egypt warns of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital
AMMONNEWS - Jordan's Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Ayed, said the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel -if taken- will have disastrous repercussions not only on Palestine, but on the Arab and Islamic worlds.
Ayed warned that the US decision will touch off despair and frustration to Arab and Muslim peoples as it constitute a violation to the Palestinian people's right to establish their independent state on their national soil with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In a speech during an extraordinary Arab League Council meeting at the level of permanent representatives called by Palestine, Ayed noted that such decision would have major implications for the peace process as a whole and would adversely affect all efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on international legitimacy resolutions, including those related to Jerusalem.
Ambassador Ayed called on the United States to refrain from taking such a decision, and instead, urge Israel to engage with the Palestinians in real and time-framed negotiations to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
