Gov't condemns continuing Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque
AMMONNEWS - The Jordanian Government on Sunday condemned the ongoing Israeli violations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif and allowing extremists into the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on a daily basis under the protection of Israeli police.
State Minister for Media Affairs and Government Spokesman, Muhammad al-Momani, said an official diplomatic letter of protest was sent today to the Israeli foreign ministry. Al-Momani said such provocative and irresponsible acts are condemned and rejected and violate Israel's obligations as the occupying power in East Jerusalem under international law and international humanitarian law.
These acts, the minister added, violate all international norms and charters that emphasize the need to respect places of worship for all religions, inflame the passions of Muslims everywhere and also undermine efforts to ease the tension in Al-Haram al-Sharif.
The minister said allowing extremists today to ascend to the roof of the Qubbat al-Sakhrah Mosque (Dome of the Rock) comes in the context of continuing Israeli attempts to change the historical and legal situation in the Al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif.
Al-Momani stressed the need to immediately stop such provocative measures, preserve the historical status and respect the Jordanian role towards holy sites in East Jerusalem, which was recognized by the peace treaty between the two countries.
