Jordan supports peace talks leading to two-state solution
AMMONNEWS - Jordan will continue to work with the international community for the resumption of serious and time-framed Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations leading to the aspired-for two-state solution, said Zeid al-Lawzi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs.
He stressed the importance of creating an atmosphere that guarantees the success of such negotiations, stressing that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, will continue to defend the Holy Places in East Jerusalem and counter Israeli violations.
Al-Lawzi's remarks came at the opening meeting of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
'We are deeply concerned by the recurring financial crises facing UNRWA and the serious humanitarian and political consequences of the lack of financial resources,' Al-Lawzi said.
Commissioner-General of UNRWA Pierre Krahenbuhl said at a press conference held on the sidelines of the meetings that the agency suffers from a financial deficit estimated until the end of November at JOD77 million, mostly allocated to the operational expenses and salaries of workers in the agency's five areas of work.
He appealed to donor countries to help the agency enable it continue provision of services to the refugees. He thanked the Jordanian government for its constant cooperation with the agency and its relentless efforts to urge the international community to continue financial support for the agency.
He assured the refugees that UNRWA's mandate is linked to a just solution to the Palestinian issue.
