AMMONNEWS - A sudden swerve at high speed made by a four-wheel-drive vehicle — as shown on road skid marks in Dubai — has claimed the life of 16-year-old girl, traffic police confirmed to Gulf News on Saturday.
It was the first known fatal accident on Dubai's Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed (MBZ) Road following the reduction of the speed limit from 120kph to 110kph on October 15.
Police confirmed that the deadly accident took place on Friday in front of Silicon Oasis on the Sharjah-bound lane.
Traffic police said a Toyota Land Cruiser suddenly slipped at high speed to the right side of the road before it hit a cement barrier — and flipped over.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Traffic Department in Dubai Police, told Gulf News that the passenger died in the hospital and another suffered serious injuries — while three others suffered moderate injuries.
'The accident took place at 1pm, when the driver lost control of the wheel and hit the cement barrier,' the officer said.
'He (driver) claimed that he hit the cement barrier on the left side before losing control over the wheel and then slipped all the way to the cement barrier on the right side of the road. however, there were no signs of damage on the cement barrier on the left side,' Brigadier Al Mazroui said.
The 42-year-old driver and the passengers — all Jordanian nationals — were rushed to hospital, but the girl was pronounced dead on arrival.
In another accident on Friday, an Asian truck driver escaped death on Jebel Ali road on the way to Al Maktoum International Airport roundabout when he lost control of the truck and the vehicle flipped over and caught fire.
The driver survived death when he managed to step out the truck before it went up in flames.
