After bitter turn in India, world’s heaviest woman may be moved to Abu Dhabi
AMMONNEWS - Eman Ahmed Abd El-Aty, who was once the ‘world’s heaviest woman’ is likely to be transferred to the United Arab Emirates after a reported falling out between her relatives and doctors supervising her obesity-related treatment in India.
Doctors from VPS Healthcare in Abu Dhabi have reportedly visited the Egyptian woman in Mumbai after being contacted by Eman’s sister Shaimaa Selim.
Photographs published by local media showed the doctors at Shaifee Hospital in Mumbai checking her condition and discussing the case with Eman’s doctors.
Dr. Shajir Gaffar, CEO of VPS Healthcare for Dubai and Northern Emirates, confirmed to Dubai-based Gulf News about receiving a written appeal for intervention from Eman’s sister Shaimaa.
“Last week, we have received a letter from Eman’s sister and are in the process of studying that,” he told Gulf News.
A doctor who was treating the Egyptian woman, who weighed 500kg when she arrived in India, said she has left the follow-up treatment team following a spat with Eman’s sister.
Dr. Aparna Govil’s announcement followed a letter written by Eman’s sister, criticizing the staff working on her after she suffered a series of paralyzing seizures that have cast doubt on whether the patient will ever walk again, in contrast to previous claims.
The Egyptian foreign ministry, however, disclosed that no new strokes were witnessed, while the effects of a previous stroke that happened 3 years ago are still being felt to this day.
‘Lost complete hope’
During an interview with Al Arabiya News Channel, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, chairman and managing director of VPS Healthcare, which runs Burjeel Hospital, said on Tuesday that his colleagues were studying the possibility of the transfer.
“We are still ready to provide Eman and her family with the help and hope needed at this time but we are not up to speed yet with her latest report on her current condition. So if she needs help, we are ready to provide it,” Vayalil told Al Arabiya.
Shaimaa said she is happy to accept an offer from the UAE as she had “lost complete trust and hope regarding Eman’s care in India”.
“We have to find an alternative route to take at this point as I have lost complete hope in the Indian doctors. They told us that they will send Eman back to Egypt in the coming week but her condition is not stable as she is suffering from seizures and going in and out of comas. We hope we can find another hospital that will take her in,” she told Al Arabiya.
