IMF supports government reform program in Jordan, says spokesperson
AMMONNEWS - Spokesperson for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Gerry Rice said the fund realizes that Jordan has come under difficult conditions due to external shocks.
'The IMF worked on supporting the government reform program that was designed to achieve more inclusive growth with the focus on sustaining macroeconomic stability, while advancing structural reforms, in various areas to promote investments and address unemployment,' Rice said in response to a question raised by Petra.
The spokesperson added that in order to decrease the public debt, the reform program emphasized the need to expand the tax base as part of the revenue reform, while alleviating the impact on the most vulnerable.
Rice affirmed that the IMF has not made any specific recommendations on which products should be subject to higher taxes, while emphasizing not raising the prices of goods that are consumed by the poor.
