Prince Zeid warns against not punishing perpetrators of sexual violence in Ukraine
AMMONNEWS - The investigation and conviction of perpetrators of sexual violence is vital for the victims who are entitled to justice and redress, said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights HRH Prince Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, In a statement issued today, Prince Zeid underscored that doing so can also have a decisive impact in preventing such crimes.
According to a new report by the UN, lack of laws, capacity and professional experience to effectively investigate and prosecute conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine is resulting in widespread impunity, and causing survivors of sexual violence to be 'victimized twice'.
The 73-page report revealed that sexual violence was also used to compel people in detention to hand over property or to do as the perpetrators demanded, as an explicit condition for their release. The majority of the documented cases happened when people, both men and women, were detained by either Government forces or armed groups, according to the report.
The report added that lack of support for victims further complicated by restrictions placed by armed groups.
