AMMONNEWS - The UNICEF has presented Jordan with a grant worth USD 2.8 million for water projects to help the country face implications of the flow of Syrian refugees, said Minister of Water and Irrigation
Hazem AlNasser on Saturday.
The grant came in response to a request from Amman to improve water supply in northern parts of the Kingdom
that are most hit by flow of Syrian refugees, a matter tyat raised demand on water by 40 percent, AlNasser
added in a statement after receiving UNICEF Jordan Representative Robert Jenkins. The minister estimated the
annual costs of a single refugee at USD 700. The statement quoted Jenkins as saying that the UNICEF would
enhance cooperation with the Kingdom to provide further support to help water authorities cope with the
intensive presence of refugees in the region.
According to Jordanian official data, the Kingdom hosts up to 1.4 million Syrians, almost half of them are categorized refugees by the UN, while the rest used to live there before the eruption of the Syrian crisis in 2011. Yet, Amman terms them all refugees.
