AMMONNEWS -By Amb. Matthew Lee - “Peace comes only with respect and coexistence, while isolation or suspicion is not the answer to common challenges!” His Majesty King Abdullah Ⅱof Jordan always stands firmly with his people against neighboring disturbance and conflict. Indeed, the situation in the Middle East region has caused anxiety to the world. Jordan has nonetheless maintained a resistance with determination toward complicated challenges and crises. Its faith and devotion to peace and stability has been an invaluable contribution to the region, and the world, as well.
In the South China Sea, the tension of disputed islands and their surrounding waters is rising due to concerned countries’ intransigence on sovereignty and interests. The deteriorating situation may cause a protracted conflict and hamper the freedom and safety of navigation. Being a key stakeholder with historical claims to territory in this disputed area, the Republic of China (Taiwan) has sought to construct peace based on previous successful experience dealing with Mainland China, and the East Asian region, since its new leadership after 2008.
This year, 2015, marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The countries surrounding the South China Sea should heed the lessons of history and commit themselves to advancing regional peace and stability. Therefore, in view of the rising tensions, H.E. President Ma Ying-jeou solemnly proposes the “South China Sea Peace Initiative”. This Initiative appeals for self constraint, avoiding an unilateral approach to increased tension, and respecting the UN “Conventions on the Law of the Sea”.
President Ma’s initiative proposes the shelving of sovereignty disputes and the establishment of a regional cooperation and coordination mechanism. This mechanism addresses the zonal development of resources, environmental protection, scientific research, maritime crime fighting, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This Inititative is also supported by the US State Department for its potential to reduce tension.
Jordan has also been a critical stakeholder in current regional flash points, such as Iraq, Syria and Palestine issues. To tackle these thorny and chronic problems, many political or even military approaches have been proposed; however, the most essential step is to build up the belief of peace. His Majesty, King Abdullah has invested a great deal of efforts on these issues. The Monarch’s initiative to promote peace, understanding and humanity in the Middle East, though praised by western and other world leaders, should carry more weight in policy making.
“Peace is the only solution!” Let’s follow the two leaders’ profound initiatives, and collaborate with our respective regional partners and international society to reach a final and lasting peace. While sincerely anticipating that the Middle East will re-embrace the peace and stability it deserves, the Taiwanese people and government will continue to work to make the South China Sea, a “Sea of Peace and Cooperation”.
