France provides 166 Million USD to finance Amman Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
AMMONNEWS - H.E. Akel Biltaji, the Mayor of Amman, the Ambassador of France, Mrs. Caroline Dumas, and the Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the French Development Agency (AFD), Mrs. Marie-Hélène Loison, signed today in Amman a 166 Million US dollars agreement for the financing of the Amman Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The agreement was signed at the Greater Amman Municipality City Hall in the presence of GAM’s Council Members.
Amman BRT will feature 150 high capacity buses using 25km of dedicated bus lanes and 8km of shared lanes. It is expected to offer clean, modern and affordable means of transportation to an average 200,000 users daily. It will significantly contribute to Amman ambition to become a “green city” by 2020, while offering enhanced transport services to Greater Amman 3.5 million population, as well as visitors.
AFD is a public financial institution responsible for implementing the development and cooperation policy of the French government. Its missions are to fight poverty and promote sustainable development through financing projects that improve daily lives of people, support economic growth and protect the environment. In 2014, AFD granted over 9 Bn US dollars of new financing from which at least 50% positively impact climate change.
Construction works have resumed with the start of construction of 4-kilometer stretch along Princess Basma Street, and are planned to be completed within 30 months for the whole project.
