Koreans to offer oversight of Jordan's first nuclear reactor
AMMONNEWS - Jordan’s Board of Commissioners of the Energy and Mineral Resources Regulatory Commission and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) agreed on Saturday to cooperate in regulating and controlling the Kingdom’s nuclear radiological work.
The reactor will be constructed on the campus of the University of Science and Technology with 5 MW capacity in cooperation with Daewoo Engineering and Construction Corporation and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).
Chairman of the board of commissioners, Farouq Hiyari , during his meeting with KINS president Kim Moo Hwan, said cooperation with the South Korean institute comes within the framework of the commission to ensure compliance with national and international standards in the operating of a Jordanian nuclear research reactor.
He also stressed the importance of KINS overseeing different phases of establishing the first research reactor and providing Korean expertise during the reactor's post-operation stage, to begin in summer 2016.
Also, Kim praised existing cooperation between the two countries, explaining that the institute has 50 years of experience in the field of legislation and oversight of nuclear projects, adding, 'We are pleased to cooperate with the Energy and Minerals Resources Commission research reactor project, which is a project in which we have mutual experience that will benefit both sides.' Kim also expressed hope that the project would contribute to the spreading of technology in the Arab region, noting that the Korean Supervisory Board is working to ensure the quality of the materials used in constructing Jordan's first research and training reactor.
Kim is currently visiting Jordan to become acquainted with the workflow of the research reactor project being built by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission at the University of Science and Technology for scientific research purposes and the preparation of Jordanian competencies in operating the nuclear program, which is expected to begin operating in 2023.
