Queen Rania of Jordan: 'Extremists rely on the complacency of moderates'
AMMONNEWS - By By Philip Sherwell - Queen Rania of Jordan has urged moderate Muslims in the Middle East to join the battle against radical Islamic groups as she warned that extremists rely on the complacency of their enemies.
The Jordanian royal, whose husband King Abdullah is a strong Western ally in the region, issued the rallying call for religious moderates in strongly-worded warning about the rise of extremist factions such as the Islamic State in neighbouring Syria and Iraq.
“I think we all have to be concerned about extreme violence,” she told CNN. “No one can actually think this is not their problem because it is.
'And when I say this is a fight between extremist and moderation I mean it is extremists on all sides and all religions and moderates on all sides and religions.
“We have to see it is our battle. Extremists historically always rely on the complacency of moderates. They think we're not going to do anything and they mobilise.”
In the interview to be broadcast on Sunday, she continued: “We have to be out there. We have to be active. Each one of us has a role to play in really fighting for it because this is our life we’re fighting for and the life of our children.”
Queen Rania said that she believed that education was the first line of defence against not just poverty and unemployment but also against extremism and instability.
But she said that Jordan’s schools, hospitals and economy were struggling to cope with the influx of Syrian refugees fleeing the civil war across the border.
