Jordan will continue to honour its commitments towards holy places in Jerusalem
Jordan will continue to honour its historical commitments towards protecting the Islamic and Christian holy places in Jerusalem, Jordanian House Speaker Atef Tarawneh said here on Monday.
Tarawneh said that the agreement, which was signed by His Majesty King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, reaffirmed the status of His Majesty King Abdullah as the custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem and was aimed at exerting all legal efforts to protect the holy places in Jerusalem in general and the al-Aqsa Mosque in particular.
Speaking at the 20th conference of the Inter-Arab Parliamentary Union in Kuwait, Tarawneh noted King Abdullah's efforts in professing the Palestinian cause that is at the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict. King Abdullah, he added, saved no effort in highlighting the Palestinian issue during his visits to various world capitals in order to ease the suffering of the Palestinians.
The Speaker thanked Kuwait for its supportive stances towards the Palestinians, noting the theme of this year's meeting, 'Jerusalem the Capital of Palestinian State.' He also spoke about the suffering of the Palestinian people and the Israeli attempts to Judaize and change the identity of Jerusalem.
Further, Tarawneh highlighted the Israeli violations against the holy shrines in Jerusalem, noting that these violations send a clear message that any peace agreement would remain threatened by Israel.
The Jordanian parliament is in constant contact with the Palestinian people, who report the Israeli violations against the holy places and the al-Aqsa Mosque, he said, adding that Jordan always takes stances towards these violations, through available legal channels.
