The purpose of this column is not to discuss the issue of Standard verses Day Light Savings time, but to discuss how this very subject may have in some small way contributed to a very serious crime that happened recently in our beloved land. It was, at least in my opinion, not the major cause of this crime, nor did it play major role; yet in a small way, and if the chronology is correct of how this crime was committed did play into the picture.
The main cause of such a crime is the subject matter of my piece this week. Based on what I understand of this tragic story and how it was committed, it was clearly a crime of passion. A very strong passion of one individual towards another that was not felt by the other nor reciprocated. It was a story of a young female university student who for some time had been harassed and hounded by this one male individual, who for one reason or another, could not face rejection, and as such took matters into his own hands, and if the rumors and innuendos are correct, allegedly and premeditatedly murdered this young woman. Although this crime is the main impetus for writing this article, it is not the main reason.
The main reason my brothers and sisters and country men, is the pervasive nature for the past few years now, of young women being harassed by young males in our society. Mind you, although much of it is in the nature of mostly spoken words or leering; non-the-less it is sexual harassment simple and true. I know this subject matter brings out many emotions on our part both due to our social and societal traditions, but it must be discussed openly and we as a people must come to grips with the changing times and the way we perceive and deal with almost 60% percent of our society… the gender based female side.
I am not sure what exactly one can do to completely eradicate the above crime from our society, as many others in this world including in the west ail from this as well. Where sex, especially female sex, is clearly pushed in almost all advertising, with varying degrees of social and societal consequences; we must be able to come up with some form of accepted and preventive policies.
For one, we can start by teaching our young male children that females are part of our society and will be contributing more and more as time goes on. That certain bad behavior towards them is not only unacceptable from any form of faith based or traditional based mores, but from any sensible or logical approach of one human to another. We can start in our mosques and churches by preaching this openly and discussing it from this was of understanding.
As for the rest of us today, we must come to a conclusion such that this one individual’s death will not be forgotten as time goes on, and start by fixing this deviant behavior and excising from our midst.
Here are a couple thoughts that I would like to throw out to you all, but I am sure many of you have even better ideas so, please feel free to share them, as this subject should matter dearly to each and everyone one of us collectively.
First and foremost, we MUST come-up with at least a few ways our women folk can participate in our society without being harassed. This obviously means some form of enforcement and protections.
For instance, it should be made abundantly clear to our Public Safety officials and directors, that they must have better training on how to deal with such issues without trying quickly to sweep them away as just child’s play of the young, or that this just happens every now and then.
Secondly; we must have a way our female citizens can feel safe walking the streets at any-time of day and night, because as I stated at the introduction of this article, many are blaming the time of day that this attack occurred. One of many reasons bantered about in the street, is had we adopted standard time by falling back, it could have meant that instead of this young woman leaving her house very early to catch a bus to university, when few are out, she would have been out during the daylight hours.
As I stated, it is my belief that this is not the reason nor the cause but a small contributing factor. As such; until our PSD department officials and frankly our public officials can come up with a more secure way that our female citizens can feel safer in our streets in times of darkness than maybe we could reconsider this time change. Maybe the PSD can organize with local neighborhoods, official neighborhood watches manned by concerned citizens, who will have direct communication with their local police officials.
Thirdly; we must have a way that any women in our society, who feel threatened by such harassment or even just scared, can call a hotline number that dispatches them to the nearest PSD department in our cities, and an officer dispatched to make sure such harassment stops and fear is dispelled.
Lastly; we must have good definitive and enforceable laws that protect women from such harassment as much of it occurs at the hands of someone who they must report or answer to. That means in the work place or at home.
My country men, this is a serious issue and it is preventable. We must treat it quickly before people resort to even more punitive and draconian measures like vigilantism to treat this issue.
God Bless Jordan and Its People.
