Inter-Parliamentary Union delegation visits Al Zaatari camp
MAFRAQ (Petra) - An Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) delegation of 11 members, representing IPU’s Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and members of the Jordanian Parliament visited Al Zaatari camp on Wednesday to witness first-hand the condition of Syrian refugees in the camp and in local communities.
Senator Samar Al Haj Hasan said the visit was made at the request of Jordanian officials, who have joined the delegation to witness first-hand the plight of the refugees and the extent of their impact on the country.
The field mission to Jordan follows the adoption of an emergency resolution at the 128th IPU Assembly in Ecuador in March 2013 on the Syrian refugee crisis, according to IPU Secretary General Anders B. Johnsson.
Findings from the mission will be reported to the IPU members at IPU’s next assembly in Geneva in October 2013, he added.
The delegation, which includes MPs from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, toured the camp, accompanied by Senator Haj Hasan and member of the House of Representatives Amjad Al Majali.
