Islamists, Syrians blast Hezbollah in Amman protest
AMMONNEWS - Jordanian and Syrian activists on Friday demonstrated in support of the people of Syria against the Syrian regime, and blasted Lebanon's Hezbollah for its military support for the regime of Bashar Al Assad.
In a demonstration held in downtown Amman following Friday midday prayers, activists from Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood movement, youth groups, and Syrian expatriates called on Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, to stop his party's military activities in Syria, blasting Hezbollah for sending fighters to bolster Assad's regime as 'killing of the Syrian people.'
Activists burnt Hezbollah's flag and pictures of Nasrallah during the protest, and chanted slogans against Hezbollah, 'The Party of God' in Arabic, calling it instead 'the party of Satan.'
Protesters, estimated at over 1,000, called on the Jordanian government to oust Syria's Ambassador in Amman, Bahjat Suleiman, and shut down the embassy, particularly after what has been described as 'repeated offenses' against Jordan made by the ambassador in posts on his page on the social networking site Facebook.
The protesters also called for preventing US military intervention in Syria through Jordanian borders.
Activists from Jordan's Islamist movement also called on the Jordanian government to work to release Jordanian detainees in Israeli prisons, many of whom have been on a hunger strike since early May.
Protesters also called for political and economic reforms, and guarantees for freedom of opinion and expression.
The demonstrators marched from Al Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman towards al-Nakhil Square.
