Srour briefs British delegation on Jordan's democratic experience
AMMAN (Petra)--Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Saad Hayel Srour met on Tuesday with a delegation from the British Houses of Lords and Commons and briefed them on Jordan's democratic experience.
Srour also reviewed the activities of the House, its monitoring and legislative role, political participation, Jordan's political, economic and social reforms and spoke of the House's accomplishments in ensuring public freedoms.
The speaker also highlighted the important role and continuous efforts of His Majesty in supporting the peace process and bringing about a just and comprehensive peace for all the region's countries.
He also stressed Jordan's stance on the Palestinian issue, affirming the need for the Palestinians and Israelis to return to the negotiating table to achieve peace, end tension, violence and instability in the Middle East and ensure the return of the Palestinians' legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Further, Srour spoke about the Syrian crisis and its impact on Jordan, which is hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees who place additional pressure on the Kingdom's limited resources.
He urged the international community to shoulder their responsibilities and assist the Kingdom to enable it to continue its services to the refugees.
The delegation praised the King's efforts to achieve development, reforms, democracy and enhance human rights in Jordan.
They also said they appreciated Jordan's efforts under the leaderships of His Majesty to work for peace in the Middle East and host Syrian refugees.
