AMMAN (Petra) The Cabinet on Wednesday asked the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) to oversee the upcoming municipal elections, which will be held on August 27.
The decision was made during a session chaired by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour.
The Commission's law stipulates that it is responsible for running parliamentary elections, as well as other elections, as ordered by the cabinet.
On Wednesday, Minister of Interior and Minister of Municipal Affairs Hussein Majali announced that the municipal elections will be held August 27, adding that the Ministry of Municipal Affairs will begin preparations for the elections in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary General for Municipal Affairs Ahed Zeyadat said that electoral committees would be set up as early as next week to begin their preparations for the polls.
Citizens who are eligible to vote must be at least 18 years old.
