AMMAN (Petra) – Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said on Saturday that states no longer need to curb media freedoms since the free and modern world had left the 'iron grip' on media to take a free fall.
He said in an interview with Jordan Radio that the viewer or listener is the one who can topple the 'iron grip' through their ability to discern hollow words meant for libel or outbidding others.
'Many politicians quickly lose their temper and tenacity on the screen, having forgotten that a young generation is tuned in and families deem them as symbols and role models. They forget their roles, tasks and moral responsibility to say the truth, without outbidding others, in a calm and democratic fashion,' he said.
Asked about new regulations to safeguard and maintain a credible media policy in the current phase, Ensour said transparency and clarity are the key ingredients for a credible media.
A successful media, he said, is the type of smart media that addresses the consciousness, soul and thought of its audience, not a 'preaching or patronizing' media, adding that Jordan Television had been able to maintain its stature in the face of fierce competition.
