* UPDATE: Initial death toll at 7 victims, 4 injured at Syrian Refugee camp in Ramtha
AMMONNEWS - Seven Syrian refugees died late Wednesday night at a refugee camp in Ramtha, northern Jordan, when a fire erupted in a caravan inside the refugee camp that hosts Syrian refugees.
The seven refugees died as a result of the fire that erupted inside their caravan in King Abdullah Park, where a refugee camp was set up to house nearly 1,000 refugees, Civil Defense Department (CDD) spokesperson Farid al-Shara' said.
Four others were injured in the fire, sustaining burn wounds and breathing difficulties.
Sources inside the camp told Ammon News that the victims are presumed to be members of one family.
Al-Shara' told Ammon News that preliminary information revealed that children had tripped over a kerosene heater while other family members were sleeping inside the 32 square meter caravan.
The fire engulfed two caravans, but did not extend to nearby caravans where other families were sleeping.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated to the nearby Ramtha state-run hospital. The injured were also rushed to the hospital where they received treatment for burn wounds and asphyxiation as a result of heavy smoke.
The fire erupted in Caravan #2 inside the King Abdullah Park, where a refugee camp was set up to house Syrian refugees fleeing from the conflict in the neighboring country.
The refugee camp at the park has 92 caravans, housing nearly 880 Syrian refugees.
The incident stirred a number of Syrian refugees to protest at the Refugee Housing Center, expressing dismay at the living conditions and treatment of the charity organization.
Meanwhile, Coordinator of Syrian Refugee Affairs in Jordan Anmar al-Hmoud refused to comment on the incident when contacted by Ammon News staff, citing that the phone call came 'late at night,' according to his expression.
Al-Shara' had initially told Ammon News that the death toll was nine killed and six injured.
Later on Thursday early morning Al-Shara' announced in a press statement that fire and rescue cadres at Irbid CDD dealt with a fire that engulfed two caravans inside the camp, causing the death of 7 refugees who suffered third degree burns and near incineration.
He added that the four injured sustained burn wounds when they attempted to put out the fire and save the people inside.
The precise number of victims is still preliminary, as officials are avoiding giving statements on the incident.
