Elections Commission to Require Financial Disclosure from Candidates
By Majed al-Dabbas
AMMONNEWS - The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) is intending to require from all candidates running for the upcoming parliamentary elections financial disclosure of the sources of finances used in their elections campaigns.
The financial disclosure requirement will be incumbent upon individual candidates and national list candidates running for the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held on January 23, 2013.
The requirement comes in efforts to minimize cases of 'political money' used in campaigns.
In statement to Ammon News, IEC spokesman Hussein Bani Hani said that the case of 'political money' cannot be dealt with without proof, noting that IEC did not receive any complaints in that regard.
Bani Hani called on citizens to come forth with evidences in case any political money allegations are brought up, noting that IEC will deal with all allegations in accordance with the Elections law.
Bani Hani stressed that Jordan is a country of rule of law and institutions, including the IEC, and will not accept any complaints of violations without submitting proof.
IEC is coordinating with the government to combat the phenomenon of use of political money, Bani Hani added, noting that the government is a main partner of the elections commissions aimed to ensure the success of the electoral process.
