Opposition Political Parties Retract from Boycott, Partake in Elections
AMMONNEWS - Four Jordanian opposition political parties announced on Saturday retracting its decision to boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections, deciding instead to take part in the elections by nominating candidates as independents and in part of national lists.
The four leftist and pan-Arab parties that decided to participate in the elections include the People's Democratic Party (Hashd), Arab Progressive Baath Party, Arab Socialist Baath Party, and the Direct Democratic Pan-Arab Movement.
In a meeting held on Saturday, the parties announced rescinding its boycott decision, while the Jordanian Communist Party maintained its stance on boycotting the upcoming parliamentary elections, citing protest of the decision to raise prices of fuel derivatives.
The Communist Party had announced earlier that it will participate in the elections, but retracted its decision after the government decided to lift subsidies on fuel derivatives, causing a substantial hike in prices.
The four opposition political parties said they will nominate candidates in individual districts and in national lists.
The parliamentary elections are slated to be held on January 23rd, 2013 amid boycott of populist and pro-reform movements, including the Muslim Brotherhood.
