Detained 'Peaceful' Political Activists to be released, 16 Excluded
AMMONNEWS - Jordanian Authorities will release political detainees who were arrested during and after protests and riots that erupted throughout the kingdom after the government's decision to remove fuel subsidies last month.
The detainees are expected to be released within 48 hours, head of the Jordanian Bar Association, Mazen Ersheidat told Ammon News.
Ersheidat said that Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour promised him over phone Sunday morning to release the detainees who were not involved in vandalism or offenses against public or private property in the recent riots, which lift a citizen and two policemen killed.
16 detainees are expected to be excluded from the release, after being charged by the State Security Court (SSC) with rioting, vandalism, and attack on public and private property, Ammon News learned.
About 150 citizens were arrested including 19 teenagers. The arrests by security forces of over 13 pro-reform activists as well since September 7, 2012, signals the government’s toughening stand toward demands for political reform in the kingdom, according to the National Center for Human Rights.
Ersheidat said that the Prime Minister stressed that only detainees who have not been proven to partake in vandalism or attacks on public and private property will be released.
