Jordan, Saudi Arabia sign amended protocol for Supreme Coordination Council
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi held extensive talks on Wednesday in Riyadh with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, discussing regional developments and reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening strategic relations between the two kingdoms across various fields.
Safadi affirmed Jordan's absolute solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of attacks by the terrorist Houthi militia, expressing full support for all measures taken by Saudi Arabia to protect its security, stability, sovereignty and the safety of its citizens and residents.
He reiterated Jordan's condemnation of the Houthi militia's attacks on Saudi Arabia and its targeting of civilians and civilian and economic facilities, describing the attacks as a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, as well as a blatant infringement on Saudi Arabia's sovereignty, security and stability.
Safadi and Prince Faisal also discussed regional developments and efforts to end the escalation, contain its regional and international repercussions, and restore calm based on principles that ensure lasting security and stability, respect for international law, good-neighborly relations, non-interference in the affairs of other countries and freedom of navigation through the Straits of Hormuz and Bab Al-Mandab.
Safadi thanked Prince Faisal for the care Saudi Arabia has provided to Jordanian citizens injured in the Houthi militia's terrorist attack on King Khalid International Airport on October 10, 2026.
The two ministers affirmed their commitment to further developing cooperation between Jordan and Saudi Arabia across various fields, reflecting the deep-rooted historical ties between the two kingdoms and implementing the directives of their leaderships.
During the meeting, Safadi and Prince Faisal signed an amended protocol to the minutes establishing the Saudi-Jordanian Supreme Coordination Council, originally signed in Riyadh in 2016 in the presence of His Majesty King Abdullah II and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The protocol aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination across various fields in the interests of both countries and their peoples.
The amended protocol updates the council's organisational structure and seeks to strengthen its role in institutionalising and expanding cooperation and coordination between the two countries.
The council is jointly chaired by King Abdullah II and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The foreign ministers of both countries will head the council's General Secretariat, while their respective ministries will follow up on its work, including preparations for council meetings and those of its affiliated committees and working groups.
The Supreme Coordination Council will replace the Jordanian-Saudi Joint Committee.
The signing comes amid continued growth in economic relations between the two countries, with bilateral trade exceeding $4 billion in 2025, accounting for 14 percent of Jordan's total trade and making Saudi Arabia Jordan's second-largest trading partner.
Saudi investments in Jordan stood at approximately $16 billion across sectors including transport, tourism, financial services and trade.
The number of Saudi tourists visiting Jordan also increased by approximately 14 percent in 2025 compared with 2024.
Safadi and Prince Faisal stressed the importance of the amended protocol in giving further momentum to cooperation between the two kingdoms.
The two ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining coordination and consultations on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
