The U.S. Department of State and several American embassies across the Middle East have warned U.S. citizens of the possibility of an unexpected escalation in the region, urging heightened vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
The State Department said the security environment in the Middle East “remains complex and carries the potential for unexpected escalation,” advising Americans currently in the region to exercise increased caution and those outside the Middle East to seriously reconsider travel to or through the region.
The warning coincided with security alerts issued by several U.S. diplomatic missions in the region amid rising regional tensions.
U.S. Embassy in Amman issues security alert
The U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a new security alert for American citizens, urging them to exercise maximum caution due to ongoing security tensions in the Middle East and the possibility of unforeseen escalation that could affect travel and regional security.
In a statement, the embassy said the security environment remains complex, with the potential for flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. Travelers were advised to monitor flight updates directly with airlines and airports.
Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports warning that this military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly.
The embassy added that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions.
The embassy also advised American citizens to avoid travel to military bases in Jordan, follow information issued by the Jordanian government regarding potential threats, and comply with official instructions related to sirens and other warnings.
Additionally, the embassy urged citizens to take precautionary measures, including enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), monitoring local media, avoiding demonstrations and large gatherings, steering clear of areas with heavy security presence, and following official guidance during emergencies.
