Minister says alternative routes available if Bab al-Mandab closes
Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Ya'rub Qudah, said that the government has prepared a plan to address any potential developments affecting traffic through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, including a package of precautionary measures to ensure the continued flow of goods into the Kingdom.
During a meeting with business leaders on Monday, Qudah said the precautionary measures include the possibility of transporting containers by land, noting that alternative routes are available should the Bab al-Mandab Strait be closed.
He stressed that the situation remains 'reassuring' for now, and that all ships arriving in Jordan through Bab al-Mandab continue to reach the Kingdom normally.
Qudah added that Jordan will sign preferential trade agreements with Rwanda and Uzbekistan by the end of this year, as part of efforts to open new markets for Jordanian products.
The government is also considering a preferential trade agreement with other countries following the recent visit to Moscow, Qudah indicated.
Qudah noted that three major projects are scheduled to be implemented next year in partnership with the private sector.
In the energy sector, he said a tender for pipelines to transport natural gas from the Risha field to various parts of Jordan will be launched soon. He added that Jordan aims to reach 80% self-sufficiency in natural gas by 2028.
