FM: Israeli measures threaten risk of escalating tensions in West Bank
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, warned on Wednesday that ongoing Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank pose a serious threat to the peace process and undermine prospects for an independent Palestinian state based on the two-state solution.
Speaking during the UN Security Council’s monthly briefing on developments in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, Safadi said the suffering of civilians in Gaza has not ended despite the halt in large-scale violence, noting that homes and schools remain destroyed, children face hunger, and the wounded and sick lack adequate medical care.
Safadi added that implementing the reconstruction and stabilization plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump offers a path to alleviating humanitarian suffering.
Safadi also warned of continued ceasefire violations and what he described as illegal Israeli actions, including the construction of new settlements, land seizures, property confiscations, the imposition of taxes on churches, and threats to the operations of UNRWA.
He further stressed that daily violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, along with ongoing settlement expansion and land acquisitions in Palestinian Authority areas, are illegitimate measures that threaten regional stability and risk escalating tensions in the West Bank.
Safadi called on the international community to take immediate and effective action to halt the annexation of the West Bank, protect the two-state solution, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and launch reconstruction efforts. He emphasized that continued occupation will only deepen injustice and instability, warning that lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved while occupation persists.
