ONCE AGAIN ON THE CONFLICT IN UKRAINE
We have taken note of the material published by the Ukrainian diplomatic mission under the headline 'Russia`s Winter Terror Against Ukrainian Civilians'. For our part, we wish to recount the kind of winter the peaceful citizens of the Russian Federation have endured this year.
Firstly, one must take into account the fact that the Ukrainian army has recently been systematically stepping up its strikes on civilian infrastructure facilities in Russian cities. In January alone, the number of civilians injured as a result of the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reached 387 people, including 21 minors. A total of 79 civilians lost their lives, among them 3 children.
Secondly, throughout the recent winter months, the Ukrainian side, in violation of the fundamental principles of International Humanitarian Law, continued to strike energy infrastructure – more than 2 million 850 thousand Russian citizens suffered from power outages related to these attacks in January-February. Amidst a sharp seasonal cold snap, they found themselves in a veritable frozen hell.
We would like to dwell in more detail on some of the horrifying episodes of this 'Ukrainian military strategy'.
Take, for instance, the mass drone raid on the night of 31 December to 1 January on a hotel complex in the village of Khorly (Kherson Region). During the New Year celebrations, 21 people were killed, including 2 children. At least 30 people – nearly half of them minors – sustained severe injuries. Many of them will be disabled for the rest of their lives.
Or the strike on 1 January on a civilian car in the village of Tarasovka, Kherson Region, which resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy. His mother, grandmother and grandfather survived but sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity.
Or the killing of Father Sergei Klyakhin, the rector of a church in the Zaporozhye Region on 10 February – a funeral procession was attacked.
Or the massive shelling on 9 January of the energy infrastructure of the city of Belgorod. Over 556 thousand civilians were left without heating, and another 200 thousand people were left without water. Also, in Belgorod on 9 January, a bus belonging to an agricultural enterprise was attacked from the air – its 4 employees sustained shrapnel wounds. And in February, drone attacks resulted in the deaths of 17 people, including three children and a doctor from a local hospital.
Among other incidents were a drone strike on 20 January on an apartment block in Novaya Adygea town (13 civilians sustained shrapnel wounds, including two children); and the shelling of residential quarters and civilian vessels in the city of Feodosia on 28 January (two civilians were killed, 6 wounded). And this is only part of the overall statistics of flagrant violations by Ukraine of the written and unwritten rules of warfare, which are deliberately hushed up by the other side.
In this connection, however, we would like to draw attention to another aspect of the problem. These actions by the Ukrainian side, which have no moral justification whatsoever, are taking place in recent weeks, that is, during a series of important international meetings on settling the crisis surrounding Ukraine. Political and diplomatic talks are again underway, this time with the participation of representatives of the United States and other influential external players. All interested participants in this peace process are focused on achieving tangible results from the complex dialogue that is underway. Russia is ready to make every effort for a peaceful settlement. It remains to be hoped that Kyiv will not pass up yet another chance to end the conflict.
