UNHCR: Significant increase in number of Syrian refugees returning from Jordan
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported a notable rise in the number of Syrian refugees returning to Syria from Jordan in 2024.
The total number of returnees reached about 17,200 refugees during 2024, including about 5,100 refugees who returned last December.
The recent months have witnessed a significant increase in the number of returnees compared to previous years, as the number of returnees in December 2024 exceeded the total number of returnees in 2023, which amounted to about 4,400 refugees, the UNHCR added.
Regarding the distribution of returnees in December, the UNHCR indicated that 64% of returnees were males, and 36% were females.
The daily rate of returnees from registered refugees in January 2025 has increased, it noted.
UNHCR estimates that more than 125,000 Syrians have returned to the country since al-Assad's regime fall, noting that the main areas of return are Aleppo, Raqqa and Daraa.
The number of Syrian refugees leaving the camps in Jordan to Syria reached 1,053 refugees who left voluntarily, according to the Ministry of Interior.
The ministry indicated last Saturday that the number of Syrian refugees leaving from outside the camps reached 10,262 refugees.
The total number of Syrian refugees leaving via Jaber border crossing reached 11,315 refugees.
