Ukraine’s role in stabilizing Syria: A path to regional and global peace

The Embassy of Ukraine in Jordan said that the fall of the Assad regime marks a turning point in Syria’s history, offering hope for the stabilization of the country after 14 years of a devastating war fueled by Russia and Iran. This conflict has left behind a shattered nation, a massive humanitarian crisis, and millions of displaced people.

While Moscow has often portrayed itself as a friend to Arabs and Muslims, its actions in Syria reveal a legacy of atrocities, destruction, and hypocrisy. By manipulating the goodwill of the Arab world to advance its agenda, Russia has perpetuated suffering and instability. Wherever Russia intervenes, death, destruction, and despair inevitably follow. Both Ukraine and Syria have experienced this firsthand, it added.

Syria’s stabilization is not only essential for the Middle East but also has implications for global security and Ukraine’s own interests. For Ukraine, events in Syria exemplify another striking failure of the Kremlin, demonstrating that the weak Russian military machine can be defeated. It can and should be forced into peace in its war of aggression against Ukraine as well, the Embassy noted.

Ukraine believes that removing Russia’s presence from Syria is essential for the security of both this nation and the Middle East. Stabilizing Syria would not only facilitate the return of millions of Syrian refugees to their homeland but also unlock economic opportunities across the region. For neighboring countries, including Jordan, this could lead to strengthened trade relations and regional partnerships, transforming the cost of displacement into a foundation for sustainable growth and the implementation of tangible economic projects.

As a nation that values safety, stability, and recovery borne out of its own experiences during Russian aggression, Ukraine recognizes the significance of rebuilding Syria based on democratic values, respect for human rights, and adherence to justice.

In 2022, Ukraine launched the ‘Grain from Ukraine’ program to address global food insecurity. Through this initiative, over 286,000 tons of essential agricultural products — wheat, flour, peas, corn, and vegetable oil — have been delivered to countries on the brink of famine, particularly to Palestine. Syria, as one of the program’s beneficiaries, recently received 500 tons of Ukrainian wheat flour, sufficient to feed 167,000 people. This is only the first batch of Ukraine’s humanitarian aid to Syria with more to come in the near future. This aid underscores Ukraine’s commitment to humanitarian support and its capacity to fill the void left by Russia’s destructive policies in the region, particularly in the sphere of food security.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has adopted a proactive stance on post-Assad Syria. He has instructed the Ukrainian government to establish direct contacts with representatives of the Syrian people and rectify the mistakes made by the Assad regime in relations with Ukraine. His directives include strengthening Ukraine’s humanitarian efforts, such as organizing food deliveries through the ‘Grain from Ukraine.’ This vision reflects Ukraine’s aspiration for a Syria that values its own people and adheres to international law and principles.

Ukraine envisions Syria’s post-Assad era as an opportunity to build constructive bilateral ties rooted in mutual respect and cooperation. Recently, a Ukrainian delegation led by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha visited Damascus to discuss the renewal of diplomatic relations and collaboration in food security, trade, education, and technology. During the visit, Ukraine expressed its readiness to share expertise in rebuilding Syria’s war-torn infrastructure underscoring a stark contrast to Russia’s legacy of bombings, killings and destruction.

As a nation deeply affected by Russian war crimes, Ukraine is uniquely positioned to assist Syria in documenting and prosecuting similar atrocities committed by the Assad regime and its Russian allies. Drawing from its own experience in collecting evidence and pursuing justice, Ukraine is prepared to offer its expertise to Syrian authorities to advance accountability and reconciliation.

For years, Russia has fueled instability in Syria, preventing millions of refugees from returning home. In contrast, Ukraine’s approach is fundamentally different: it delivers grain instead of bombs, cooperation instead of fear, and hope instead of despair. By leveraging diplomatic channels, humanitarian aid, and political dialogue, Ukraine seeks to rebuild Syria on a foundation of trust and mutual benefit.

This approach aligns with Ukraine’s broader vision of a world where freedom, justice, and peace prevail over brutal force and oppression. By filling the void left by Russia, Ukraine not only strengthens its role on the global stage but also enhances the security of regions far beyond its borders.

Ukraine’s efforts in stabilizing Syria exemplify its commitment to global peace and its ability to lead by example. By combining humanitarian aid, diplomatic engagement, and a steadfast belief in universal values, Ukraine is helping to transform a region scarred by war into one of hope and renewal. This reinforces a powerful message: totalitarian regimes that oppress and kill their own people will inevitably fall, but nations united by universal values, peaceful coexistence, and international law can rebuild and thrive.
