Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Makram Qaisi Sunday discussed with Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission Rev. Yakubu Pam ways of enhancing tourism cooperation and increasing the number of Nigerians coming to Jordan for religious tourism.

Qaisi said during the meeting Jordan is one of the key religious tourism destinations in the world, noting its religious and cultural diversity, and the values of tolerance and coexistence the Kingdom upholds.

The minister reviewed Jordan's efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of successive civilizations throughout history, stressing the Kingdom's keenness on forging closer relations with African countries.

The minister said religious tourism, both Islamic and Christian, lays the framework for stronger relations, bring people together and contribute to knowledge and cultural exchange.

He pointed to Christian pilgrimage landmarks in Jordan, including the Baptism site, Mount Nebo, Mar Elias Church, Our Lady of the Mountain Church and Mukawer as well as other archaeological sites such as Umm al-Rasas and the 'Cave of Jesus', which are important religious and tourist destinations for Christian pilgrims in the region.

For his part, Rev. Yakubu Pam said the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission is working to transport Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land, stressing the importance of Jordan as a key Christian pilgrimage destination.

He also noted support provided by Jordan since the operation of Hajj missions to the Kingdom since 2021, thanking the Tourism Ministry and all concerned authorities for their efforts to arrange for and receive Nigerian pilgrims.
