House committee briefed on GAM's development projects, plans
Chairman of Lower House Tourism and Public Services Committee, MP Obaid Yassin, highlighted the 'urgent' need to find core solutions to the transportation problem and reduce traffic congestion in the city of Amman.
Chairing a committee meeting on Thursday, in the presence of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Mayor, Yousef Shawarbeh, to discuss a number of issues related to the GAM-provided services and the key obstacles in this regard.
Yassin noted the committee is keen to learn about all details related to investment projects aimed to advance Amman's services and tourism conditions.
He called on GAM to launch long-term plans and projects with a 'clear' time frame and strategy to develop services provided to citizens.
For his part, Shawarbeh reviewed the key GAM's projects and development plans, which will be implemented to advance Amman's services, which would reflect 'positively' on the citizen, pointing out that the GAM carried out a set of development projects aimed at improving Amman's infrastructure.
Shawarbeh noted Amman's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) transports approximately 700,000 passengers per month, which contributed to reducing traffic congestion, adding that the 'best' solution in this regard comes within an integrated system that aims to developing and amending legislation related to the traffic law to reduce related violations by stiffening legal procedures to deter violators.
Regarding GAM's other projects, Shawarbeh noted multiple enterprises were executed to increase Amman's green area by launching parks and forests, which contributes to reducing eco-pollution resulting from climate change.
Shawarbeh noted cost of Amman's waste management amounts to approximately JD80 million annually.
