DPA holds coordination meeting for Palestinian refugees' hosting countries
Jordanian Department of Palestinian Affairs (DPA) on Sunday held a coordination meeting for the countries hosting Palestinian refugees, to orchestrate common positions during the meetings of the Advisory Commission of UNRWA, which will convene in Amman next Monday and Tuesday.
Speaking at the meeting, DPA Director General, Rafiq Kharfan, highlighted UNRWA's 'great' political role, which was evident during the ministerial meeting held last September on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77).
UNRWA has a 'clear' role in achieving security and stability in the region, he noted, stressing the need to mobilize political support to vote on renewing UNRWA's mandate in the UN General Assembly.
Kharfan also noted Jordan, under its Hashemite leadership, 'will not give up' the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, which received support from Arab leaders during the Arab summit held in Algeria recently.
Referring to UNRWA's recurrent financial hardships and their repercussions on Palestinian refugees, he noted this crisis requires mobilizing financial support and assistance for the agency's budgets from donor countries.
UNRWA should take into account the natural demographic increase of Palestinian refugees and their growing needs during budget preparation, he said.
