A long-term national plan was unveiled Thursday with the goal of reducing national water losses to less than 25 percent by 2040.
The Ministry of Water and Irrigation developed the strategy in collaboration with a water governance initiative financed by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
'The government is aware of the scale of the challenges in the water sector, climatic changes, and the deterioration of potable water sources as a result of poor rainy seasons,' said Minister of Water and Irrigation Muhammad Najjar during the plan's launch workshop.
'The water sector has an ambitious plan to cut losses as the most pressing issue right now,' the minister said at the event attended by USAID Mission Director Sherry Carlin.
He said the ministry is working to cut water losses by speeding up the implementation of projects to replace networks, increase their capacity, improve their performance, and find new water sources.
Carlin, in turn, emphasized the importance of 'continuing the partnership with the Ministry of Water and specialized companies with the goal of strengthening the management of the water sector and improving infrastructure,' noting that the national strategy for water loss is being launched at a critical time for the Kingdom.
