Shutdown of 2G, 3G networks forthcoming, says regulator
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) on Sunday announced that it had renewed the licenses of 2G-powered telecom companies and offered them technology neutrality, which means that 2G networks will go off air soon.
In a statement, the TRC said that 3G operators also have technology neutrality enshrined in their licenses, expecting that 3G networks will come to a final exit within a period not exceeding 6 years from now.
The commission called on all users of mobile communications services and importers of communications equipment in the Kingdom, not to purchase any communications equipment or systems that support the two mentioned generations only, as the period of use will be short-lived.
The TRC explained that it does not have any regulatory power allowing it to impose the use of a certain type of technology, as companies that renew frequencies licenses have the advantage of technology neutrality that enables them to invest in operating the latest radio communication technology services inside the Kingdom.
