Revenue from the income and sales taxes as well as government dividend collections from its ownership in public companies (known as national contribution) jumped by a major 25 per cent in the first four months of 2020, standing at a total of JD1.855 billion against JD1.482 billion in the corresponding period of 2020.
Breaking down the figures, Director-General of the Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD) Hussam Abu Ali on Tuesday said collections from the sales tax in the January-April period stood at JD1.243 billion, up by 25 per cent of JD275 million from the JD968 million recorded in the same period of last year.
As for the income tax, the collections jumped from JD514 million in the first four months of 2020 to JD612 million in the first third of the current year, signaling a JD98 million or 19 per cent increase, according to the ISTD director.
The higher collections are driven by the reopening of the economy, expansion of the taxpayer base and a crackdown on tax evasion and avoidance.
