Civil defense cadres, backed by helicopters of the armed forces and vehicles of directorates of concerned departments on Monday evening extinguished a fire that broke out in the western end of the Jordan River and extended to areas of Jordanian agricultural lands.
Al-Aghwar ash-Shamaliyah district administrator, Ali Hawamdeh, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the fire, which extended for several kilometers on the border strip, mostly burned forest trees, reeds and dry herbs along the Jordan River, while the fire, according to initial estimates, affected about 150 dunums of agricultural land, including about 100 dunums of wheat and 50 dunums separated from citrus trees.
Hawamdeh pointed out that efforts of the various concerned parties, which were made for more than 8 continuous hours, prevented the fire from spreading to large areas, noting that cadres from the foresters, the civil defense and the concerned authorities will remain in the area in a state of readiness and precaution in anticipation of the eruption of the fire and dealing with any spot that may catch fire again.
The district's director of agriculture, Mowaffaq Abu Sahyoon, indicated that a committee specialized in limiting damages, which includes the directorates of agriculture, civil defense and the Jordan Valley Authority, will begin its work on Tuesday until the damages of the fire are limited in detail.
