PM: Jordan places capabilities, diplomacy in service of Palestinian cause
Jordan is devoting all its capabilities and diplomatic efforts for the service of the Palestinian cause and the realization of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh told his Palestinian counterpart Muhammad Shtayyeh on Monday.
Khasawneh said during a meeting with Shtayyeh at the Prime Ministry that protecting Jerusalem and its holy sites is a Jordanian responsibility that stems from the Hashemite custodianship over Muslim and Christian sanctities in the holy city.
He added that the immediate priorities of the Jordanian diplomacy at the current stage are centered on sustaining the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, preserving the historical and legal status quo in occupied Jerusalem, stopping unilateral Israeli measures, including provocations against worshipers, halting settlement construction and land confiscation in addition to preventing the forced eviction of Palestinians from Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
The prime minister underlined the need to use the 'advanced status' of the Palestinian cause to work towards finding a just and lasting solution leading to an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Khasawneh stressed the need to give the required momentum for a political and economic effort to support the Palestinian National Authority 'to enable it to serve the cause and the Palestinian people.'
For his part, Shtayyeh voiced the Palestinian leadership, government and people’s appreciation of Jordan’s position under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II in support of the Palestinian people, pointing to the joint diplomatic effort undertaken by the foreign ministers of Jordan and Palestine with influential world capitals to 'fill the political vacuum through initiatives aimed at finding a just solution to the Palestinian issue.'
The Palestinian prime minister also emphasized the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and its role in safeguarding them.
Shtayyeh, who is visiting Jordan as part of a tour of several Arab Gulf countries, spoke of the need to launch a comprehensive dialogue that includes all components of the Palestinian people to 'unify Palestinian ranks and strengthen its position and ability to regain its rights'.
On bilateral cooperation, the two prime ministers discussed ways to increase Jordanian-Palestinian trade exchange and agreed to convene the Jordanian-Palestinian Joint Higher Committee soon. They also underlined the need to maintain two-way coordination and consultation in light of the 'critical circumstances' which the Palestinian cause is going through.
They pointed to the importance of the international community's continued support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to enable it to play its role in supporting Palestinian refugees in its areas of operation in the Palestinian territories and countries of the region.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and his Palestinian counterpart Riyad Malki delivered a briefing on joint Jordanian-Palestinian diplomatic efforts, coordination and consultation and contacts with world countries to come up with an international position in support of the Palestinian issue toward finding a just and comprehensive solution to the conflict.
