Senate head urges int'l help to halt Israeli attacks in Jerusalem, Gaza
Senate president Faisal Al-Fayez Saturday called on the international community to shoulder its moral and legal responsibility to stop Jewish settlers' attacks and 'state terrorism' by the right-wing Israeli government against the Palestinian people in Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and Arab cities in Israel.
It is not enough that societies that believe in freedom, justice and the people's right to a free and dignified life only issue timid statements of condemnation and denunciation, Al-Fayez said in a press statement to mark the Palestinian Nakba.
'We in the Senate reaffirm our absolute support to all efforts made by His Majesty King Abdullah II in defence of the Arab identity of Jerusalem and the steadfastness of its people, and his firm response to all Israeli measures and decisions aimed at obliterating its identity and Arab-Islamic character, as well as His Majesty's stance to counter Israeli designs to alter the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem,' he said.
Al-Fayez said that the Palestinian people, with their free will, will stand up to Israel's obstinacy and triumph to regain their rights and lands, and will not be dissuaded by Israeli terrorism and the crimes of settlers and hardliners from their struggle to liberate their land and holy sites and fulfill the right to an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
'Jerusalem will remain the first Arab issue and a top Jordanian priority until the Palestinian people establish their independent state on Palestinian national soil, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) as its capital,' he said.
As the Palestinians continue their struggle and offer sacrifices for liberation, we reiterate on the Nakba anniversary that 'we uphold the national Palestinian fundamentals, and we remind the world community of its obligations towards the Palestinians to support their right to self-determination and end the Israeli occupation, the longest in history, 'he said.
