Representative of the Foodstuff Sector in the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Raed Hamada, called on the government to reopen suspended economic sectors to resume their activities within the conditions, standards and protocols approved by the epidemiological committee, and tighten penalties for non-compliant businesses.
In a press statement put out on Saturday, he said the chains of the commercial and service sectors are 'interconnected and complementary to each other,' adding suspension of a particular sector affects the overall trade movement.
Stressing the need for a 'quick' reopening of the sectors that have remained closed since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, he pointed to the importance of the decision to extend working hours for economic establishments, calling for ending Friday curfew.
Moreover, Hamada stressed the need to set ultimatums to reopen sectors that have suspended commercial and service activities, in order to retain their investments, highlighting their role in providing job opportunities for the Jordanian workforce.
The suspended sectors, especially the wedding halls, and sports clubs, have suffered 'great' losses that threaten their existence, and lead others to bankruptcy and closure of their economic activities.
Noting the concrete steps in this regard, he stressed the need to reach an agreement between the JCC and the concerned health authorities on protocols according to which all economic activities are allowed to resume operations, to maintain sustainability of the national economy and overcome difficulties and challenges that surfaced during the past year.
On the national level, Hamada highlighted the importance of cooperation and joint action to stimulate national economy and stop the damage that affected many economic sectors, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, referring to adherence exhibited by the commercial and service sector to all the conditions set to preserve the citizen safety and health.
