Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, Musa -Maaytah, said Jordan state has sought since its establishment to preserve its stability and the citizens' lives despite the engulfing 'difficult' circumstances.
The minister's remarks came while addressing the launch of the project, dubbed: 'Promoting Civil Human Rights in Jordan,' organized by the Lawyers Without Borders (LWOB), in cooperation with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the European Union, in conjunction with the International Day for Rights Human.
The government is open to dialogue with all parties, despite the difficult circumstances induced by the Covid-19 pandemic, he said, adding that it has insisted on continuing the democratic process and conducting parliamentary elections to preserve the citizens' civil and political rights.
The 19th Parliamentary elections took place, which witnessed 'wide' turnout, which has reached 30%, as 75% of the MPs are new members, according to the minister.
The minister indicated that the implementation of the defense law was at its minimum limits in light of the Covid-19 pandemic to protect and preserve the citizens' health.
Stressing the need to preserve a 'wide' level of freedoms and respect human rights in all fields, the minister indicated that human rights reports should be based on 'real numbers, far from impressions.'
Referring to the endorsement of many amendments to the Jordanian Constitution in 2011, with regard to human rights, he stressed the need for concerted efforts by civil society institutions to 'change the stereotypical view of women's participation and empowerment in all fields.'
For her part, Ambassador of the European Union to Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou, said the EU is committed to supporting democracy and human rights in its relations, in line with the basic principles of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights, and the rule of law, in partnership with many Jordanian institutions.
Hadjitheodosiou said the current cooperation aims to provide the appropriate environment to encourage citizens to 'actively' participate in their society's issues, especially in the current situation, to find solutions that mitigate the Covid-19 crisis.
In celebrating International Human Rights Day, Hadjitheodosiou affirmed the EU's role in its support for human rights in Jordan and local civil society institutions to face challenges, enhance political participation, and monitor elections with a focus on women and youth.
In turn, the Spanish ambassador to Jordan, Aranzazu Banon Davalos, affirmed the 'deep-rooted' Jordanian-Spanish relations and the ongoing partnership between the two countries, highlighting the importance of the role of civil society institutions in integrating local communities to achieve social cohesion.
The AECID has great experience in dealing with projects concerned with developing the culture of raising awareness and gaining advocacy, according to the Spanish envoy.
Moreover, Davalos noted the AECID's commitment to strengthening the human rights situation, in partnership with the EU and increasing the network of relations between civil society institutions and the decision makers.
