The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the 'heinous' attempt to burn the Church of Gethsemane in occupied East Jerusalem by a Jewish extremist.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, the ministry's spokesperson, Dhaifallah Fayez, said the attempted assault is 'a horrendous and condemned crime,' calling on the Israeli authorities, as the occupying power, to abide by their obligations in accordance with international law to hold the perpetrators accountable and to take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such acts.
The Kingdom, based on the Hashemite custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, will continue its role in protecting the holy sites, according to Fayez.
Fayez stressed the Kingdom's refusal to target the holy sites and attack the churches in Jerusalem, their authorities, their properties, or their right to manage their affairs in accordance with international law and the status quo.
