FM, UN official discuss Israeli annexation decision of Palestinian lands
AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov on Wednesday discussed international efforts to halt the implementation of an Israel decision to annex Palestinian lands and launch direct and effective negotiations to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Mladenov briefed Safadi on steps the United Nations is taking to convene a meeting of the Middle East Quartet to discuss measures needed to salvage the peace process.
During the meeting, Safadi reviewed the Kingdom's efforts and communications to formulate a clear and effective international position on halting Israel's annexation scheme and reviving a true international effort to achieve lasting peace on the basis of a two-state solution in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions as the only way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The two officials stressed that an Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian lands would constitute a violation of international law and will undermine the foundations of the peace process.
Safadi warned of the catastrophic consequences of such a decision on the security and stability of the region.
'The decision will kill the two-state solution and fuel the conflict, making the one-state option an inevitable fate, which the world cannot stay silent on especially with the institutionalization of apartheid and racial discrimination,' the minister stated.
He underlined that the protection of a just peace and international law require the international community to act immediately to address the annexation decision.
